Benefits of Introducing a PACE Program to Your Loved One

Elderly Woman

Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, also known as PACE, for short, have many benefits to offer those in need. PACE programs afford elderly people the opportunity to remain in their own home, in their own community, even when they qualify for nursing home placement. This is accomplished by building a support structure and offering services to make living at home as safe as possible. Understanding the benefits of this program will make it easier to choose the right care option for your loved one.

You Are Not Alone

As people age and become frail, they require greater support. As the caregiver, it is important to realize that you are not alone when providing care and trying to figure things out. Making healthcare decisions could be the hardest part of the journey. Having a team of knowledgeable professionals to help make decisions eliminates the guess work and feelings of self-doubt during the process.

One benefit of a PACE program is the increased level of personalized care due to the small volume of patients being cared for by each team member. The care team becomes knowledgeable about each patient’s living situation, likes/dislikes and personal needs. Input from family members is also considered vital to updating the care plan for each patient.

One-Stop Shopping

Having all of your healthcare needs met in one setting almost sounds too good to be true. PACE programs offer multiple services in one convenient location. Doctors and nurses are on-site to ensure routine medical needs are being met. Chronic conditions are monitored and prevented from becoming worse. Other healthcare providers, such as physical and occupational therapists, are on-site, eliminating the need for travel to other locations.

While care is provided at each PACE program center, it also takes place at home and in the community. Transportation to specialists and other providers is always available and is provided by the PACE program. Each program has access to various contracts, extending care to the home and community. An example of this extension of care would be visiting nurse and home health services. While most care is delivered at the center, services are delivered where they are needed.

Benefits to Participants

PACE programs place a strong focus on preventative care. Attempting to decrease repeated hospital stays is one of the benefits of a PACE program. Managing chronic conditions and preventing them from becoming an acute illness is one way to achieve this goal. Recognizing signs and symptoms before they become unmanageable is a better treatment option than frequent visits to the local emergency department. The skilled healthcare professionals at a PACE program are trained to detect the smallest changes in health conditions.

Benefits to Caregivers

Being a caregiver is not an easy duty, especially when there are other demands in life in addition to the care of an elderly family member. Sometimes the need arises where short-term care arrangements need to be made. PACE program employees can help arrange respite services if they are needed.

Another benefit of a PACE program is the access to resources and caregiver support that is available. Knowing you are not alone and connecting with others that share in similar frustrations decreases feelings of isolation. Support groups, training and other services are available to help families cope. Families can have peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are being taken care of while they can’t be available all the time.

Cost of Treatment

Medicare and/or Medicaid covers PACE program participation. PACE participation can also be paid for privately. PACE organizations offer Medicare prescription drug Part D coverage. If you join a PACE program, you’ll get your Part D-covered drugs and all other necessary medication from the PACE program based on your Medicare and/or Medicaid eligibility.
